Architectural notes: a letter about the preservation of the house

I would like to draw your attention to the following. By the decision of the Moscow City Council of December 8, 1987 (the official number of the decision has not yet been confirmed), houses No. 4 and 4a on 4th Sokolnicheskaya Street are to be demolished. I've been living in the first one since 1931.

I feel sorry for the house where I've lived my whole life. The house is brick, five storeys high, without an elevator and a garbage chute. There are 40 apartments in it (there are three—room apartments in two entrances, four-room apartments in two). I've seen a lot of houses of the same type in Moscow.

But house No. 4a is unique. Built in 1938, it is called the Metrostroyevsky. It has 16 two-, three- and four-bedroom apartments. There were communal apartments here in the past, although the apartments were originally designed separately. It was in 1938. The author of the house is architect Nikolai Ivanovich Demchinsky (I think he built the administrative building on Ilyinka, apparently the Metrostroy building). He moved into his own house on the fifth floor. I moved here about twenty years ago, but I don't know if I'm still alive.

It's a sin to break down such houses. Redevelopment? Maybe. But why break it? The house does not bother anyone, and Moscow needs it as an architectural monument of the 1930s.

Save it if possible!

The Executive Committee of the Sokolniki district Council, having considered the statement of T. Nikiforova V., informs that the Moscow City Executive Committee is currently considering the demolition of houses No. 4 and 4a on 4th Sokolnicheskaya Street.

House No. 4 on 4th Sokolnicheskaya Street was built in 1930, five-storeyed, brick, with all kinds of amenities, has 38% wear and tear. According to the conclusion of the Moszhilniiproekt Institute, the specified house was built with defects. In this regard, the executive committee of the district council considers it inappropriate to put it on major repairs with redevelopment or on scheduled preventive maintenance, since these types of repairs will not ensure the elimination of existing defects.

House No. 4a (built in 1938), an extension to House No. 4, is of no architectural value.

Considering also that there is an acute shortage of preschool institutions in our area, it is planned to build a kindergarten on the site of these houses. The project is currently being developed.

A museum is being created at the Pechorniiproject Institute. We are looking for materials and documents related to our history and the activities of our employees. In this regard, we ask you, if possible, to send us materials about the activities of architects M. V. Kryukov and V. K. Oltarzhevsky, their biographies and photographs. Both of them worked for our project organization while in prison. M. V. Kryukov's name is mentioned in the seventh issue of your magazine in the article "On the history of the construction and demolition of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior." The brief information about him, however, does not specify the date of his death. We know this date. It happened on January 9, 1944. He died while being a prisoner.
